Elephants rarely get cancer partly because they have around 20 copies of the TP53 gene, compared to just one copy in humans. TP53 produces the p53 protein, which plays a key role in detecting DNA damage and triggering cell repair or cell death (apoptosis) if the damage is too severe.

With more TP53 copies, elephants have an enhanced ability to eliminate potentially cancerous cells, greatly reducing their cancer risk despite their large body size and long lifespans.
