Step back to 2005 at Six Flags Great Adventure – a season defined by record-breaking thrills, new family adventures, and major park changes.

The highlight of the year was the opening of Kingda Ka on May 21, 2005. Built by Intamin, this massive launch coaster shattered records as the world’s tallest (456 ft) and fastest (128 mph) roller coaster. It dominated the skyline and drew crowds from around the world.

2005 also introduced the Golden Kingdom expansion, featuring exotic theming, the Temple of the Tiger show, and the brand-new children’s area Balin’s Jungleland with play areas, rides, and family-friendly attractions. The Temple of the Tiger show was so popular that the park had to expand the arena just months after opening.

Not everything was about new thrills, though — 2005 also marked the removal of Viper, clearing the way for its future replacement, El Toro. Meanwhile, coasters like Medusa, Batman: The Ride, and the park’s massive collection of thrill machines kept guests coming back. The Wild Safari drive-through was still in operation, and the park balanced intense thrills with family entertainment in a big way.

2005 was very much a “Premier era” moment for Six Flags, focused on big investments and headline-grabbing rides that pushed the limits of theme park engineering.

Kingda Ka is a steel launched strata coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, and one of the most iconic roller coasters in the world. Built by Intamin and opened on May 21, 2005, it broke records as the tallest and fastest roller coaster ever built. Standing at an incredible 456 feet, riders are launched from 0 to 128 mph in just 3.5 seconds before climbing straight up the towering structure. At the top, the train crests the 456-foot “top hat” before plunging down a 418-foot vertical drop with a 270-degree spiral twist. The ride then speeds over a camelback hill, giving a burst of airtime before racing back into the station. Themed around a mythical Bengal tiger, Kingda Ka anchors the Golden Kingdom section of the park and continues to hold the title of the world’s tallest roller coaster nearly 20 years later. Known for its sheer speed, height, and breathtaking presence on the skyline, Kingda Ka is considered a must-ride for coaster enthusiasts around the globe.
