Today, we proudly celebrate #WorldRhinoDay 🦏🧡

Have you met 22-year-old Vishnu, a male Greater One-Horned Rhino at your Toronto Zoo? Sadly, rhinos like Vishnu are listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, with only a few thousand remaining in the wild. Their range is just a fraction of what it once was, and threats like habitat loss and poaching continue to put pressure on their survival and presence in-situ.

But Vishnu also represents hope. His species is one of the greatest conservation success stories! From fewer than 200 individuals in the early 1900s to over 4,000 today, Greater One-Horned Rhinos have made an incredible comeback thanks to dedicated global efforts.

Here at your Toronto Zoo, Vishnu’s story goes beyond conservation. His journey of specialized foot care from creams and bandages to soft carpeting, wood chips, and regraded outdoor spaces - was recognized through our Welfare Wellies competition, highlighting the importance of individualized, compassionate care. These proactive efforts help ensure Vishnu’s comfort and well-being every day.

Vishnu’s resilience is a reminder of the dedication of your Guardians of Wild, the power of compassionate wildlife care, and the importance of protecting species like his in the wild 🌍

On your next visit to your Toronto Zoo, stop by the Indo-Malaya region and say hi to Vishnu as he enjoys both his refreshed outdoor habitat and indoor home. Please note that there may be times when he chooses to relax in his behind-the-scenes home, making him unviewable to guests and members.
