This World Maritime Day, we’re spotlighting how science can restore what once seemed lost.

Shinnecock Bay, once impaired by nutrient pollution, is now a thriving estuary, and the first and only Mission Blue Hope Spot in New York.

For over a decade, researchers in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences on the main and Stony Brook Southampton campuses have led restoration efforts using clam sanctuaries and oyster reefs as natural filters.

The results: no brown tides in years, cleaner water, and the return of seagrass and marine life. It’s a model of how local science can create global impact. #SBUClimateSolutions
