Pregnancy number two was wonderful (despite the constant nausea and thirst for lemonade!). It took a while to get pregnant and I was not in a good place. Because of my previous experience, I was very hesitant to be excited too quickly.

But remember THIS IS A GOOD STORY!

Luckily it progressed perfectly. I passed all tests with flying colors and in 2010 welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world. We didn’t know her gender in advance. I wanted a girl so badly I convinced myself she was a boy so I wouldn’t be disappointed.

From the moment I held her, my heart exploded with more love than I could have ever imagined.

We were released from the hospital two days later and cautiously brought this little human - born during a blizzard - home to our New York City apartment.

As the days progressed, we got our parenting sea-legs and I finally figured out how to properly nurse (wow that was hard). However, after a few days something felt off. My head didn’t feel right. My headaches kept getting worse. Was I hungry? Yes. Thirsty? Yes. But something was off.

I went to the pharmacy to check my blood pressure (remember those desktop cuffs?!) and it was through the roof. My doctor sent me to the emergency room.

Diagnosis: postpartum preeclampsia. Who knew that was a thing? I was shocked I had a complication after giving birth.

No one knows the exact cause of postpartum preeclampsia, but it’s believed that the changes in blood flow and hormone levels after childbirth are the culprits.

After a blood pressure pill and monitoring (including pumping several bottles using the fancy hospital grade pump) they released me.

Life went back to normal and my journey as a mom began.

If I hadn’t listened to these warning signs I may not be here today. We must not stop paying attention to our bodies once we give birth.

We must teach pregnant women and new moms to speak up when something feels off. NO ONE knows their body better than them. We must empower women to feel confident so they can reach out to their doctors, get the help they need, and save their lives.
