I’m a mom of three who has been pregnant four times. Each pregnancy was unique and as each progressed, I learned to listen to my body’s signs.

With the first, we started trying, got pregnant quickly, and rejoiced with ease. As the pregnancy progressed, we stopped hearing a heartbeat. Eventually, it was deemed unviable. We tried letting it pass. It didn’t. We tried forcing it out with the pill. It didn’t work. I finally had to have a D & C.

It was one of the hardest times of my life and something I still think about often.

If I didn’t pay attention to the signs and seek medical attention early, I’m not sure how this would have affected my health. It’s possible because it was so early it would have passed on its own without us ever knowing. It’s also possible not having the D & C could have caused long lasting effects preventing me from having subsequent successful full-term births.

In 2008, there were very few supportive miscarriage resources. I was a wreck. We had a trip planned to Puerto Rico for our anniversary and I couldn’t get over being sad. Funny enough, it rained the whole time as if the island was crying with me too.

BUT THIS IS A HAPPY STORY, not a sad one. It’s a story of a mom of three. My healthy babies eventually arrived; I just needed to be patient.

I’m sharing this story in case you’re experiencing something similar and need a message of hope. NO ONE should feel alone at this time.

As a fierce women’s health advocate, I’m excited to partner with nysdoh and Hear Her Concerns on this four-part series to share my pregnancy stories and bring light to each complication I’ve experienced. But again, this is a happy story. It’s one where because I paid careful attention to the early warning signs I saved my life.

My goal is helping the next generation of moms recognize these signs so they can seek medical attention immediately.

Over 700 people die each year in the US from preventable pregnancy issues. Let’s stand up, support each other, and empower pregnant women to voice their concerns.
