Now real quick—let’s talk about what DRO actually does.

Sony’s DRO (Dynamic Range Optimizer) is like a cheat code for tough lighting—especially at night. It boosts shadow detail hard, and slightly pulls down the highlights so the whole image feels more balanced—closer to how your eyes naturally see light.

But here’s the deal:

👉 It only affects your JPEGs, videos, and what you see in the viewfinder. It does not touch RAW files.

👉 If you do want to apply it to RAW, you gotta run it through Sony’s Imaging Edge Desktop to export it as a TIFF. It’s doing some next-level tone curve adjustments—like applying different contrast levels to different zones (think: skies vs shadows), which is tough to mimic in Lightroom unless you’re masking everything manually.

So when should you use DRO?

	1.	You want a quick photo without editing.

	2.	You want your in-camera preview to show you
something closer to real-life lighting—so you can imagine how it’ll look after editing.

BUT—watch out: DRO can make you underexpose without realizing it. The boosted shadows can trick you into thinking you’ve got more info in your shot than you actually do.

So look—if you’re still struggling to shoot at night, DRO can help you fake it ’til you make it. But like I always say—you shouldn’t suck if you watching my videos 🤷🏾‍♂️. Learn the fundamentals first, then use stuff like DRO or Evoto to make your life easier. Same logic.
