The West Highland Way Diaries: Day 5

Despite this being our shortest day at 8 miles, it ended up being just as beautiful (and demoralizing) as the rest. 

We woke at Tyndrum Holiday Park to be greeted by a woman with a hilarious amount of temporary tattoos, and she insisted that we take some. I think she could tell we were all a bit down on our luck. Tess’s vasculitis was flaring up, Kallie’s toes were blistering more and more, and I was in the throes of a terrible head cold. Mallory was just happy to be there - thank goodness for her optimism.

We trudged the old military road for most of the day, with the alpine of Scotland looming closer and closer with each step. In what became a daily norm, we saw hundreds of sheep, old friends on the trail, and stopped for a few riverside snack breaks. 

When we arrived at the Bridge of Orchy, we set up camp and headed to the hotel for a drink and some quiet time to ourselves. Despite us not having a reservation and being well under dressed for the occasion, the host got us a table and treated us like royalty. We chowed on mussels, cheese, meats, and bread. It was divine. 

Our evening in camp was spent reading a few proverbs and folktales before we were absolutely swarmed by midges and had to retreat to our tents for the rest of the night. 

Another lovely day spent in the highlands 🙂‍↔️
