Our newest #WorkoftheWeek is a photograph taken by the late Martin Karplus depicting a young woman aboard a cruise ship. Visit the McMullen to see it in person! 

One of our newest collections is dedicated to the work of Martin Karplus, an Austrian-American chemist. Following the Nazi-occupation of Austria, Karplus and his family fled to Switzerland, then France, then America. His works depict scenes from his travel in Europe and the Americas starting in the 1950s. Karplus’ work is notable in documenting an era following Pan American’s Boeing 707, the first commercial jet, which allowed for accessible and fast international travel. However, this piece is taken aboard the SS Liberté, a French ocean liner. Originally this boat was named “Europa,” and was a German ship, that was given to the French following World War II. Karplus’ use of color is pronounced here with bold reds placed against auburn decking and rosy-tinted metal.
