Imagine if your life today were defined by the mistakes you made as a kid. Back then, you probably thought you knew it all, but you were given the chance to grow, learn, and realize you didn’t.

So why do we treat kids like adults just because their actions look that way? Most of us tried to grow up too fast. The difference is, we weren’t locked in prison for it. Our mistakes may not have been the same, but none of us had the knowledge, experience, or control we do now.

Yes, actions have consequences at any age. Maybe you got grounded, whooped, or suspended. Maybe you got counseling, or had to apologize, or fix what you messed up. There is disagreement on many methods, but one we know for sure doesn’t work? Locking kids up.

Kids who are arrested are more likely to reoffend than kids who receive real help and support to grow. Before you decide who does and doesn’t get that chance, ask yourself, what if someone back then had decided you didn’t deserve it? Teenaged you might’ve rolled your eyes, cursed under your breath, and acted like you didn’t care. But today, you know better. So please, DO better for our kids who are still learning.

Never forget, we were all once kids who made mistakes. Second chances—and the people who graciously gave them to us—helped shape us into the upstanding adults we are today.

Be that person for a child in our community.

Punishing children as criminals only increases the chance that they’ll grow up to become one. Recognizing them as the children they are helps support their growth into healthy adults. That is our only path towards truly safer communities.
