According to abcnews, Cuban officials said she passed in Havana due to “health conditions and advanced age.”

Assata Shakur was convicted of the 1973 killing of a New Jersey state trooper, which took place during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike. Assata, who was also wounded during the incident, maintained her innocence. She later escaped from prison and fled to Cuba. While there, she was granted political asylum, and she remained there throughout the years.

A Facebook account presumed to belong to her daughter, #KakuyaShakur, also shared the news of her passing. In a post, it read, “At approximately 1:15 PM on September 25th, my mother, Assata Shakur, took her last earthly breath. Words cannot describe the depth of loss that I am feeling at this time. I want to thank you for your loving prayers that continue to anchor me in the strength that I need in this moment.
