“The Afro-Latin@ Reader: History and Culture in the United States” is a must-read for those interested in Afro-Latinx history, culture, and identity in the U.S. The 584-page collection features over 60 articles, short stories, interviews, essays, poems, and memoirs unpacking centuries of Afro-Latinx history, colorism, gender dynamics, classism, and media representation. 

Published in 2009, it explores Afro-Latinx roots in genres including salsa, mambo, boogaloo, and hip-hop and the community’s role in major league baseball. It also features the work of legendary leaders, including Young Lords member Felipe Luciano, and was co-edited by Miriam Jiménez Román, co-founder of the Afro-Latin@ Forum, and Juan Flores, the late Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.
