🐾 There are three categories in which animals could result in a deduction for you.

1️⃣ Medical.

🐶 We’re talking about specifically trained animals that provide medical support.

⚠️ That medical support must rise to a certain need.

💡 Emotional support animals?

The IRS typically disallows any medical deduction for those.

✅ The animal has to be specifically trained for that particular medical purpose, and your deduction would be limited by all the other medical limitations when it comes to deductions on your 1040.

📊 Specifically on Schedule A, you must exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income before the first dollar of medical expense above that becomes deductible.

2️⃣ Business.

💼 Two possibilities here:

Resource for a business, like a guard dog 🐕‍🦺.

👉 The animal must be specifically trained for that purpose.

👉 Only the expenses associated with that specific business use are deductible ... not general maintenance, grooming, or food.

Income generation, like an animal that’s a social media star 📸.

👉 Only expenses directly tied to the generation of income could be considered deductible.

💭 When it comes to deductions and the tax code in general, if it sounds too good to be true, it often is.
