Can You Write Off Your Wedding? Not So Fast.

You might’ve seen posts like this:

💐 “Donate the flowers — get a deduction!”

👗 “Give away the dress — write it off!”

🏰 “Get married at a nonprofit venue — full tax write-off!”

Sounds clever.

Problem is… the IRS doesn’t give out deductions just because it’s a feel-good move.

Here’s what you need to know:

1️⃣ The Flowers.

Yes, fresh flowers have value when you buy them.
But after a long, hot wedding day?

They’re wilting at best — trash at worst.

💥 No fair market value = no real deduction.

2️⃣ The Dress.

It’s now used clothing.

To deduct it, you’d need:

✔ A 501(c)(3) donation recipient.

✔ A legitimate third-party valuation.

✔ Documentation that would survive an audit. (And no, Goodwill receipts don’t cut it.)

3️⃣ The Venue.

Let’s say it’s owned by a nonprofit.

If you pay for it and get something in return (your wedding), you must subtract the value you received from any “donation” claim.

This isn’t giving — it’s buying.

🛑 Bottom Line:

Trying to turn your big day into a big deduction?

The IRS will likely see through it.

✅ Give to charity because it matters.

✅ Take the deduction if it’s legitimate.

✅ But don’t blur the lines between gifts and transactions.

If you want to actually use the tax code to your advantage —

Not just play games with it?
