rice cakes in Cantonese is “leen goh” (“nian gao” in Mandarin) which sounds like “year tall” symbolizing growth year over year - or progress. we eat this comfort dish often and all year round but it’s popular for lunar new year because of its auspicious name! 

note there is a sweet treat also called “leen goh” that is entirely different (also yum)
