October 1, 1986: Reagan honors Carter’s birthday and the art of civil disagreement.

In 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library on Jimmy Carter’s birthday, President Reagan highlighted a truth we often forget: strong disagreement can coexist with respect.

Our differences—rooted in love of country and a commitment to tackling real challenges—aren’t something to hide; they’re a sign of a functioning democracy.

“We are all Democrats, we are all Republicans, because we are all Americans,” he said, framing debate as a tradition, not a threat. And in honoring Carter, Reagan reminded us that public service leaves a mark bigger than any partisan fight—the White House belongs to the country, not the party.

Disagreement is inevitable. Disrespect is optional.
