How to make Kombucha (part 2): first fermentation! 🦠🍺

Hi welcome back!! Sorry it took so long, my first batch with the ginger kombucha didn’t work (not potent enough & my apt is too cold). So I had to restart the process with plain kombucha; you can also buy a starter on Amazon for $10. DM if you want the link!

Now that we have a strong SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast), we can begin our first batch. The ingredients are the same; we are simply feeding the scoby sugar once again, and the fermented tea will serve as the base for our kombucha. After 7 days, we’ll add fruit, ferment again, and we’re ready to go.

I’m no scientist, just a kombucha fan, so if you have any questions, please ask away! I’ll try my best to answer 🤓

🫖Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
-large clean jar
-cheesecloth or paper towels
-rubber bands
-1 SCOBY (if you don’t have one, watch the previous video!)
-1 cup of starter (water from scoby)
-1 cup sugar (don’t use brown)
-8 bags black tea or 1 1/2 tbsp loose leaf
-10 cups of water

Make sure to wash your hands before handling anything, you don’t want to introduce any unwanted bacteria! Boil 2 cups of water and stir in sugar until dissolved. Add tea bags and steep for 10-15 minutes. Remove and discard the tea bags and pour the liquid into the jar, followed by 10 cups of cold water. Let the liquid cool to room temperature (very important!), then add your kombucha starter liquid and SCOBY. Cover the jar with cheesecloth or paper towels, secured with a rubber band. Place it in a dark spot away from any sunlight and wait 1 week.

See you next week!
