It's #InternationalRaccoonAppreciationDay 🦝

Did you know? The Raccoon species are known to be clever, curious, and adaptable animals. Here at your Toronto Zoo, we’re honoured to be home to two special, mask-faced residents: Micro and Manny.

🦝 Micro is 14 years old. She was initially found on Zoo grounds in poor health and cared for by our team. Unable to be released back into the wild, she has lived here ever since. She is affectionately known by her Wildlife Care team as the "little old lady", who is less active.

🦝 Manny is 4 years old. Taken illegally from the wild at a very young age and kept as a pet, he was surrendered to the Mississauga Animal Services. Because he grew up in a home, Manny lost his natural fear of people and did not develop the survival skills he would need to survive in the wild. He, too, was deemed non-releasable and found a forever home here at the Zoo. He is bigger in size, in comparison to Micro.

Raccoons are omnivores with a wide diet ranging from fish, frogs, and crayfish to nuts, berries, and even bird eggs. Urban raccoons have adapted to scavenge from human trash, which is why they’re so often spotted in our neighbourhoods.

While Micro and Manny are safe and thriving in their Canadian Domain habitat, it’s important to remember that wild animals belong in the wild. If you find a raccoon (or any wild animal) that appears sick, injured, or orphaned, please do not remove it or bring it to the Zoo 🦝

Instead, contact a provincially licensed wildlife rehabilitator, such as our partners at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, to determine the next best steps.
