1. Faith and Fellowship
I used to have crippling performance anxiety, to the point where I would refuse to eat and would get dizzy before competition. However, reading my Bible and connecting with other Christians has allowed the Holy Spirit to work in my life and literally shed me of anxiety, fear, and lack of faith. I cannot emphasize this enough!

2. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!
I honestly struggled with this so bad due to many years of restlessness. Sleep = recovery. Simple as that. In order to prevent injury or quicken the healing process, you must sleep. 8-9 hours is best for a high-level athlete. Our bodies recover best between 10:00pm and 2:00am, so even if you get 8 hours after 2:00am, it won’t be optimal recovery.

3. Nutrition!
This is obvious but we often don’t understand exactly what and when we should be eating. Emphasis before practice/performance: Carbs, beet juice. Emphasis during practice: Carbs and electrolytes. Emphasis after practice: protein and cherry juice. Emphasis before sleep: magnesium (and melatonin, but you don’t want to build a tolerance). Everyone is different so it’s better to consult with your team dietician for your specific needs.

4. Time Management
As a d1 collegiate athlete, you put your body through a lot. However, if you don’t know how to manage your time well, things are only going to be made worse for you. I recommend going to bed early waking up early. If you’re doing homework, try to put the phone away. Procrastination doesn’t hurt anybody but yourself.

5. Understanding Losses are a Lesson
I used to beat my self up after every bad performance and wouldn’t feel good again until I performed well again. Every time I failed or lost, it gave me a reason to push harder. Every trial is a blessing, and the sooner you understand this, the sooner you’ll grow and succeed.
