“It was going good until it wasn’t,” said RJ Hampshire in the post-race press conference for the MXoN.

RJ gave it his all, as he always does, rolling from 10th to second in his first race of the day. Then the crashes started (with some help at first, as he said, due to some contact with Jo Shimoda and Jan Pancar). What wasn’t widely known is that Hampshire was already banged up from a crash days before the race.

“The day that JCoop switched over back to the 250 with Deegan out, I had a practice crash, something so small, but I ripped my ribs off my fascia and I might have cracked a couple,” he told SMX Insider. “But at that point it was like, ‘Okay, you’re in it now, you need to do what you can.’”

He didn’t make excuses and still went fast, but the crashes kept mounting. Two big ones in the third moto ended his run, as he punched a hole in his gas tank, and that was it.

“I crashed seven times today, so I think that gives you an idea how comfortable I felt out there,” he said in the press conference.

Still, Hampshire’s seventh in moto two contributed to Team USA’s second-place finish, so Hampshire collects an FIM MXoN medal for the first time in his career.
