Things I wish I knew during my first bulks-

1. Dirty bulking isn’t the only way to bulk

Dirty bulking mainly focuses on hitting a calorie surplus by eating large amounts of food that include highly processed foods, fast food, and even junk food. The nutritional quality is more so an after thought, as long as the calorie goal is met.

2. Clean bulking can be a slower process, but the end results and overall health of your body outweighs the patience needed

Clean bulking involves a more controlled (200-500 range) calorie surplus, but the focus is on whole, nutrient-dense foods-lean proteins (chicken, fish, lean beef), carbohydrates (oats, brown rice, white rice, quinoa…), and healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil). So it prioritizes quality over quantity.

Clean Bulking is better if you’re focused on staying leaner, avoiding excessive fat gain, and building muscle over the long term. It’s ideal if you want to maintain a healthier approach, and it’s easier to transition into cutting after a clean bulk.

Dirty Bulking may be appealing if you’re someone who finds it hard to eat enough calories to gain weight, or if you don’t mind gaining some fat in exchange for faster muscle growth. It’s also useful for short, intense bulking phases but requires more effort to shed later on.
In the end, it comes down to your personal goals and how much fat gain you’re willing to tolerate during your bulk.

If you’re more interested in keeping things leaner, clean bulking is likely the better route. If you prioritize rapid muscle gain and don’t mind a bit of extra fat, dirty bulking might work for you, but it requires more discipline once you’re ready to cut.

What’s your experience with bulking? Are you trying to keep things lean, or are you okay with a little fat gain to pack on more muscle?
