Renewable energy has become the world's biggest source of electricity in 20225, helping drive down coal and gas use.⁣

China, India, the EU and the U.S. combined, account for almost two-thirds of electricity generation and carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector globally.⁣

In the first six months of 2025 China added more solar and wind power than the rest of the world combined. China also saw a 2% reduction in fossil fuel generation and emissions.⁣
However the EU and U.S. are falling behind with emissions and fossil fuel generation increasing in both regions. ⁣
