This is Between 30”-32”, a sculptural torso. It is a fractured monument to the body, a humanoid structure built from the literal pressures of categorization. Its form is composed of a plaster cast, earthenware clay, string, and the remnants of tape that failed to contain it, all held by the memory of a body in space. It is a monument not to an idealized form, but to the fragmented and often painful reality of being measured, categorized, and defined within the queer community. But Between 30”-32” is more than just an abstract form; it is a critique. It personifies the profound dissonance between the promise of queer liberation and the rigid, often exclusionary body standards that persist, particularly among gay men. It confronts all that is unspoken and compromising: the quiet but constant pressure of physical archetypes, the insidious hierarchy of desire hiding in plain sight, the immense pressure to conform to a type, the strange anonymity of a body that fails to fit a label, and the subtle power dynamics played out on dating apps and in queer spaces. Between 30”-32” is the embodiment of a carefully curated world where the body is codified and desirability is king.

The creation of this piece was a deeply physical process, born from a place of vulnerability and frustration. I wrapped my own body ritualistically over the course of a week, sifting through the discomfort of being contained. The act of letting the tape stretch, tear, and fail was a necessary surrender—a way to deconstruct the ideal to build something that spoke a more complex truth. Through it, I work to legitimize the profound feeling of being physically ‘othered’ in the very community that was supposed to be home, marking the beginning of my fascination with dissecting queer physical nomenclature, piece by messy piece. 👤📏❓
