Vote No on Measure J to protect animals, local organic farms, and the future of Sonoma County agriculture.

At Straus Family Creamery, we’ve spent decades building a sustainable, organic farming community rooted in environmental stewardship and humane animal treatment. All of the dairy cows on our 13 supplying dairy farms are pasture-raised, antibiotic- and hormone-free, and fed 100% organic, non-GMO feed. 

Measure J’s cap on livestock operations would have devastating consequences. The impact of any reduction of size or number of farms in Western Sonoma County would ripple through our rural communities, including harming service industries like veterinarians and suppliers who care for and feed animals. Small family farms, including those in our network, risk being forced out of business. Our local economy will suffer, with damage to surrounding service industries and the organic farming community we’ve worked so hard to build.

Measure J doesn’t improve animal welfare or water quality. Instead, it outsources food production to areas with fewer environmental and animal welfare protections. The ban’s vague and imprecise targeting would hurt the organic farms that provide pesticide-free, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free food to our region and beyond. Straus and other local brands that rely on organic milk from these farms would no longer be able to produce the consumer-preferred organic products we craft today. When farms in our community shut down, reliance on food production and livestock shifts to imports from other areas of the country and the world, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting our ability to ensure animal welfare and environmental integrity.

Measure J has united people across the political spectrum to protect the agricultural heritage of Sonoma County. Let’s stand together to preserve the sustainable, organic farming practices that define our community.
