Deana Giambo ‘24 is a Psychology major and a Social Work minor who has been playing tennis since she was four, and has been on the Marist women’s tennis team since she was a freshman here on campus.

“When I was four my parents signed me up for every single sport, and I was just bad at every one other than tennis, and I remember really liking it. It was like a natural feeling I think, so I stuck with it,” she stated.

It’s not simple to be playing on the tennis team while balancing school and life; “It’s really time intensive. Whether we are out of season or in season, it’s 6 days a week, and a lot of the time it’s in the morning during the fall season.”

Giambo became passionate about student athlete’s mental health, knowing how stressful it can be. As a leader on the Student Athlete Advisory Board this year, she worked with an athletic director to organize bi-weekly mental health meetings for her team.

“We talk about various coping strategies for a lot of things, and we also talk about the way we feel and what we want. Before, everyone was nervous to ask for a day off if we needed one, it was really bad,” Giambo said. The junior also once filmed a suicide prevention commercial with a few teammates, and because of it, the athletics administration now provides suicide prevention training.

Giambo hopes that the mental health meetings will spread to the other sports on campus, and believes that the mental health representatives, people who are elected by coaches or captains on teams, are a good way to start; “It’s just a person you can go to if you feel overwhelmed. It’s really important.”
