LET’S BE CLEAR — CRUNK WAS BORN IN MEMPHIS, NOT ATLANTA.

(According 2 Hip Hop) Facebook

After Lil Jon’s Breakfast Club interview, it’s time to give credit where it’s due. Long before “Get Low” or “Knuck If You Buck,” Memphis had already laid the blueprint for Crunk Music.

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, DJ Spanish Fly, DJ Squeeky, and DJ Zirk were running the underground with bass-heavy, chant-driven tracks that had the whole South moving. That dark, hypnotic sound became the DNA of Crunk.

Then came DJ Paul & Juicy J — the architects of Three 6 Mafia — who took that raw Memphis sound and turned it into an unstoppable force. “Tear Da Club Up,” “Who Run It,” and “Sippin’ on Some Syrup” weren’t just hits… they were blueprints for the entire genre. When “Tear Da Club Up ’97” dropped, clubs shut down from the energy.

Even Lil Jon has admitted Three 6 Mafia influenced his sound. His 1997 “Get Crunk, Who U Wit” album followed the Memphis formula — heavy 808s, chants, chaos. He took it nationwide, but he didn’t start it.

The first time “crunk” appeared in a song title? Three 6 Mafia – “Gette’m Crunk” (1996). The South had been saying it, but Memphis gave it a sound.

So let’s be clear:
Lil Jon made Crunk global.
Three 6 Mafia made Crunk possible.

Memphis didn’t just influence the sound — we invented it.

Culture starts here.
Heavy on Memphis.
