How many of us stop running when we get injured?

I’ve learned a lot now that I brought in a professional who’s built a rehab program to not only make the pain go away but to fix the root of the problem.

Avoiding miles won’t heal your Achilles, loading it the right way will.

The answer isn’t less running. In fact, stopping completely will only hide the pain - the moment you’re back out there running, the issue is very likely to come back and hit you harder. I speak from experience. I’m not new to Achilles problems and I’m to blame! Man, it was me who neglected it for a long time.

Achilliles tendonitis is caused by overuse, sudden change in volume or intensity, and tight or weak muscles.

See, the thing is I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with running 40-60mile weeks, so it wasn’t intensity or volume. It was the strength training! The truth is, my leg muscles aren’t strong enough to support my weekly mileage. So there are deficiencies to correct and imbalances to balance out so the tendon isn’t compensating - repetitive strain.

I’m taking proactive steps to ensure I won’t need to stop running anytime soon.

Today’s workout was 5 reps of 5mins on / 1min off alongside some single-leg focused exercises to develop the muscle group that supports my running and the Achilles.

The goal: rebuild strength. I know how it feels to be injured. It’s sad, emotional, depressing, and lonely. You’re not alone!

If you’re dealing with Achilles tendonitis, don’t give up—train smarter, not less, and go see a professional. I can’t stress that enough.

The road to recovery is about embracing the discomfort because it will be there until it isn’t.
As long as you’re able to keep the pain anywhere between 1-5/10, you should be on the move.

Focus on gradual volume and not intensity and keep showing up.

I have a marathon to run in 8 days, I trained 4/12 weeks in this training block and I’m going to tell you the same thing I told myself weeks ago “Keep Going”.

Today I motivate you, tomorrow you motivate me.
