I too used to make this mistake!

I used to think runningwithlucho (Group 1 Pace Police Officer as I call him 😅) was blocking progress for not letting us run faster than the target pace.

Truth is, each workout has a purpose!

Example:

- Intervals: 6x800s at 5K effort improve VO2Max
If you go out too fast, you’ll empty the tank before you can finish the workout and hit your paces every rep = Bad quality reps

- Tempo Runs: 2 x 15min at Threshold Pace develop Lactate Threshold (your HR Zone 4)
You push too hard, you move out of the HR Zone which defeats the whole purpose of the workout

- Race Pace reps: 5x1Ks at race pace gets you to familiarize with the goal pace.
If you don’t stick to your pace, you’re not training your body to learn that pace, so on race day, you’ll be unable to turn on autopilot mode.

- Power Repetitions: 10x200s improve neuromuscular efficiency and running economy
Over-pacing doesn’t help.

If you don’t train as you should, you risk compromising recovery time, not seeing any progress despite training hard, and you’re more likely to get injured!

In the past months, I’ve learned that training hard isn’t just about effort but purpose and intention!
