Postcard from Mars: Acheron Fossae 🔴

Back on the Red Planet with new views from Mars Express – and it’s a bit of a crackin’ landscape. Literally.

In April, we took you to the eastern end of Acheron Fossae – a rugged region shaped by ancient lava, ditches, and craters. Now we’re heading west, where the ground tells another dramatic story.

Slide through to discover:
- Deep cracks formed as Mars’s surface was pulled apart
- Signs of ancient geological activity, over 3.7 billion years old
- Valleys filled not with water, but with slow-moving ice and rock
- Evidence of Mars’s ever-shifting climate

Like Earth, Mars wobbles on its axis. But without a big Moon to keep it steady, the tilt swings wildly – leading to Martian ice ages and warm spells that shape the surface in surprising ways.

The latest images reveal everything from jagged fossae to smooth lowlands – and even clues about past glacial flows.

Captured by our Mars Express, which has been studying Mars from orbit since 2003, these snapshots continue to reshape how we understand our neighbouring planet.

Two decades in, and Mars still has more stories to tell. What feature caught your eye in this latest postcard from the Red Planet? Tell us in the comments 👇
