Juice just gave us a fresh look at a familiar face – our Moon 🌕

During its lunar flyby in August 2024, our Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) tested its Radar for Icy Moon Exploration (RIME) instrument — a radar designed to probe beneath the icy crusts of Jupiter’s moons. But before reaching Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, RIME had a go at mapping the lunar surface.

Swipe the slider to compare RIME’s first-ever ‘radargram’ with a NASA elevation model — and spot how the bumps and dips line up perfectly! This test was more than a pretty picture: it showed scientists how to fix interference from Juice’s electronics, improving the radar’s performance for the deep-space journey ahead.

And there’s a bit of history too. The region RIME scanned includes the iconic crater seen in the legendary Earthrise photo taken by Apollo 8’s William Anders in 1968.

Juice’s next stop? A gravity assist from Venus (instruments off for this one — it’s far too warm for icy moon gear).
