Have you ever explored a mangrove forest? 🌳

26 July is unitednations’ International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

From the Amazon to Malaysia, mangroves are some of the most vital and vulnerable ecosystems on Earth — and they’re breathtaking from above.

These forests between land and sea are biodiversity hotspots, nurseries for fish and crustaceans, homes for monkeys and birds, and powerful natural defences against storms and rising seas. They’re also climate champions, storing carbon in their soils at rates higher than most forests.

But mangroves are disappearing fast — three to five times faster than other forests.

That’s why astronauts aboard the iss and Earth observation satellites like Sentinel-2, Kompsat-2 and more keep watch. Their images help scientists, policymakers and communities monitor change, plan restoration, and better protect these essential ecosystems.

Swipe through to discover mangrove-rich coastlines in Venezuela, India, Madagascar and beyond — captured by space-based observers.
