Earth like you’ve never seen it before: through a P-band radar! 🌳

These striking images come from Biomass, our forest mission that uses a P-band radar instrument to measure the woody parts of trees, where most of their carbon is stored. Roughly half of a tree’s weight is carbon locked in its woody biomass.

Swipe through to see:

- A winding river through Bolivian forest
- Brazil’s rainforest
- Indonesia’s volcanoes
- Gabon and the Ivindo river
- Hidden desert features in Chad
- Nimrod Glacier in Antarctica

The carousel includes a short video showing a forest in Bolivia: we start with an optical view from copernicus_eu Sentinel-2, where only the treetops are visible – then smoothly crossfade into the Biomass radar view, revealing what lies beneath the canopy.

And here’s a fun fact: Biomass can also “see” below the surface. Its radar can penetrate dry sand up to five metres deep, helping us uncover ancient riverbeds and lakes buried beneath deserts. It also sees deep into ice, making it ideal for measuring glacier and ice-sheet movement, even in the face of snowfall and surface melt.

That’s the power of P-band.
