From the treadmill aboard the iss to a flying lab that simulates weightlessness, these runners are keeping fit in the most extraordinary places. Swipe through to see: – astro_alex_esa, Samantha Cristoforetti, thom_astro, astro_andreas, astro_timpeake, astro_luca and esamatthiasmaurer staying in shape while orbiting Earth at 28 000 km/h – astro_johnmcfall testing a prosthetic leg on a parabolic flight during short bursts of microgravity – a pioneering step in inclusive space exploration Exercise in space is vital. Without gravity, muscles weaken, bones lose calcium, and even the heart gets lazy. That’s why astronauts work out for up to two hours a day to stay strong and healthy. Treadmills on the International Space Station come with a twist: astronauts have to strap themselves down to avoid floating away mid-run. Meanwhile, doctors on Earth monitor their health and adjust workouts as needed. Whether in orbit or mid-parabola, running in space is about staying fit, pushing limits and preparing for the future of human exploration.
