A black hole on the move – and it’s hungry. 🕳️

600 million light-years from Earth, a star met a dramatic end… torn apart by a roaming supermassive black hole in a spectacular burst of energy.

Thanks to a tidal disruption event (TDE) known as AT2024tvd, astronomers were able to spot this invisible cosmic beast with the help of hubbleesa – and here’s the twist: It’s not where it’s supposed to be.

Supermassive black holes usually sit quietly (or not-so-quietly) at the centre of their galaxies. But this one is 2 600 light-years off-centre – the first time an offset TDE like this has ever been observed.

That’s just one-tenth the distance between our Sun and the Milky Way’s central black hole!

The offset TDE appears as a blue dot in ultraviolet light, set against the warm orange glow of its host galaxy. Hubble’s high-precision imaging confirms what other observatories like nasachandraxray and thenrao’s Very Large Array hinted at: this is something rare.

Meanwhile, a much larger black hole – 100 million times the mass of the Sun – lies in wait at the galaxy’s true heart…
