What do you feel when you see this image? ✨

A towering column of cold gas and dust — 9.5 light-years in height — emerges from the Eagle Nebula, a stellar nursery located around 6500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens.

This striking formation is a region of active star formation, where dense pockets of gas resist the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from nearby young stars. These forces sculpt the nebula’s iconic shapes, compressing material and triggering new generations of star birth.

The Eagle Nebula, also known as Messier 16, is one of the most well-studied star-forming regions in the Milky Way. It’s home to the famous Pillars of Creation, located just beyond the edge of this image. What you see here is another pillar within the nebula, equally dramatic and shaped by the same dynamic forces.

This image combines original Hubble data with new processing techniques, revealing intricate structures in greater detail than ever before. It offers scientists and space enthusiasts alike a refreshed look at the processes shaping our galaxy.

Fun fact: The name “Eagle Nebula” comes from the appearance of the entire cloud complex, where dark, wing-like structures resemble an eagle in flight.
