A galaxy piercing the fog of the early Universe? 😶‍🌫️

Using its incredible infrared eyes, esawebb has glimpsed a galaxy so far away — and from such an early time in the Universe — that it’s left astronomers scratching their heads.

Say hello to JADES-GS-z13-1, a galaxy seen just 330 million years after the Big Bang. That’s over 13 billion years ago, when the cosmos was still wrapped in a thick fog of neutral hydrogen — a veil that should have blocked any bright ultraviolet light from reaching us.

But here’s the twist: Webb detected a surprisingly strong glow of Lyman-α radiation — a specific kind of light emitted by hydrogen atoms that shouldn’t have been able to escape through that fog at such an early time.

It’s like seeing a lighthouse beam slicing through the mist before the fog has even begun to lift. Scientists are now wondering: how did this light get through?

Theories include:
– A rare population of super-hot, massive first-generation stars
– A powerful active galactic nucleus (a supermassive black hole lighting up its host galaxy)
– Or something entirely unexpected...

Whatever it is, JADES-GS-z13-1 is rewriting our understanding of cosmic dawn — the era when the first galaxies and stars were just beginning to emerge.

This is just the beginning. Webb isn’t just looking back in time — it’s uncovering mysteries we didn’t even know to ask.
