Mysterious “Little Red Dots” in the young Universe 🔴

Shortly after @esawebb began its science operations, astronomers spotted something unexpected: tiny red objects in the distant, early universe. Dubbed “little red dots”, these enigmatic objects have puzzled scientists, raising exciting new questions about the processes that shaped the cosmos shortly after the Big Bang.

To uncover their secrets, a team of astronomers scoured Webb’s data from several groundbreaking surveys, including the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey, the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), and the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) survey. This meticulous work has resulted in one of the largest catalogues of Little Red Dots to date.

Here’s what they’ve uncovered so far:
- A cosmic debut: These mysterious objects first appear in large numbers around 600 million years after the Big Bang.
- A rapid decline: Their population drops significantly by 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang.
- What are they? Spectroscopic data from the Red Unknowns: Bright Infrared Extragalactic Survey (RUBIES) suggests many Little Red Dots are accreting black holes. However, much about their nature remains a mystery.

The six Little Red Dots shown here come from various Webb surveys, with their redshifts and names displayed in the image. Their characteristic yellow-white cores and red, fuzzy halos highlight their unique presence in the vast darkness of space.

What do you think these “little red dots” could teach us about the Universe’s infancy? Let us know your thoughts below!
