What food would you bring to space? 🥟

For the first time ever, traditional Polish pierogi are heading to the iss . Our project astronaut astro_slawosz is bringing a taste of home to orbit during Axiom Mission 4, sharing a menu inspired by Poland’s rich culinary heritage.

In the words of Sławosz: “I wanted to bring a truly Polish menu to space—something that I could share with my fellow astronauts. Food is more than just nourishment; it provides comfort and a sense of connection. I knew from the start that taking Polish delicacies into orbit would be worth the effort.”

But making pierogi space-ready was no easy task. The first batches kept bursting, and it took months of perfecting freeze-drying techniques with family-owned company lyofood to ensure these dumplings could survive microgravity and be rehydrated with hot water on the Space Station.

The Ignis space menu includes:
- Pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms
- Polish leczo stew with buckwheat
- Tomato soup with noodles
- Apple crumble

All food taken to space must be crumb-free, lightweight, and last at least 18 months. Bonus meals like this make up just ten per cent of an astronaut’s diet, providing variety and a much-needed morale boost. They also offer a way to bond with crewmates—just as food does on Earth.
