A cosmic masterpiece: NGC 2566 through Webb’s eyes 🤩

Meet NGC 2566, a spiral galaxy 76 million light-years away in the constellation Puppis. This stunning @esawebb picture combines observations from Webb’s Near-InfraRed Camera and Mid-InfraRed Instrument to reveal the galaxy’s striking spiral arms, central bar, and intricate patterns of gas, dust, and stars.

Why is NGC 2566 so fascinating?
- It’s nearby (in cosmic terms), making it perfect for studying star clusters and gas clouds.
- Webb’s near-infrared data from uncover hidden stars deep within gas clouds.
- Mid-infrared data highlights warm interstellar dust, including fascinating molecules like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

But Webb isn’t working alone! Observations from @alma.observatory, capturing the cold clouds where stars are born, and @hubbleesa ultraviolet and visible views of young stars are helping astronomers piece together a complete story of how stars form.

What’s even better? This Webb image is part of a Treasury programme, meaning scientists and the public can dive into the data right away to unlock the secrets of our Universe.

Swipe through to explore the beauty of NGC 2566 and imagine what else might be waiting to be discovered.
