Despite a challenging political climate, COPUOS, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space continues to drive progress through consensus-based diplomacy, stepping up on the objectives agreed in the "Pact for the Future," including a potential #UNISPACEIV conference in 2027. We are already seeing significant developments: 🌚 Lunar activities: The Action Team (ATLAC) is working to deliver key recommendations on lunar coordination and interoperability by 2027. πŸͺ¨ Space Resources: States have commenced negotiations on draft principles on the legal aspects of space resources, also culminating in 2027. πŸ›°πŸŒ Space Traffic: An Expert Group on Space Situational Awareness (SSA) has been established - a crucial first step toward global space traffic coordination and the COPUOS mechanism that includes direct industry participation. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡³ Beyond our core work, UNOOSA is actively breaking down silos across the UN system, collaborating with partners like the International Telecommunication Union on workshops to address ITU filings and satellite registration with the UN, International Civil Aviation Organization on airspace integration, and the UN Environment Programme on the environmental impact of space activities.
