🌌 The 64th Session of the Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS2025) just wrapped up! Highlights below 👇

1️⃣ New ad-hoc Observers: 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇺🇬 Uganda, the League of Arab States, ACES Worldwide & Lunar Policy Platform joined the 104 Member States & 56 Observers of the Committee. 

2️⃣ States reaffirmed the priority of holding UNISPACE IV in 2027. Incoming Chairs 🇲🇦 Morocco and 🇮🇹 Italy will act as co-facilitators of a process to negotiate the objectives, organisation, and scope of the landmark event. 

3️⃣ UNOOSA hosted 3 side events with industry leaders like Amazon Kuiper, ARABSAT, Astroscale, ClearSpace, Digantara, D-Orbit, NorthStar & Viasat, showcasing solutions for Space Situational Awareness, Traffic Management & Debris Removal. 

4️⃣ Member States proposed a Study Group on Legal & Policy Aspects of Space Traffic to address orbital safety. A decision will follow at the next plenary. 

5️⃣ After the passing of 🇵🇱 Amb. Andrzej Misztal, 🇦🇺 Steven Freeland was elected Chair of the Working Group on Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities. The Group is drafting guiding principles for safe, peaceful & sustainable use of space resources. 

6️⃣ The Lunar Activities team (#ATLAC), led by 🇷🇴 Ulpia Botezatu & 🇵🇰 Hasan Abbas, presented a draft multi-year workplan & priority topics for upcoming review. 

7️⃣ On 12–13 May, UNOOSA hosted the 2nd Meeting of National Focal Points on Registration. Experts from 🇬🇧UK CAA, 🇩🇪DLR, 🇺🇸State Dept, 🇧🇷AEB, 🇯🇵MOFA & 🇬🇧UK Mission shared best practices for a future ‘Registration Toolkit’ to harmonise global space object registration. 

8️⃣ The 🇵🇭Philippine Space Agency launched Si Tala at ang Kanyang Lakbay Kalawakan, a children’s book teaching key space law concepts through the journey of a young astronaut. A great step toward #Space4Youth! 

9️⃣ UNOOSA unveiled its Global Space Law Project, highlighting support to States in building sound legal frameworks. Next up: a Space Law Technical Advisory Mission to 🇬🇭 Ghana!
