🌍 Did you know that countries register satellites with the United Nations? 🛰️ On 12–13 May, #UNOOSA hosted the Second Meeting of National Focal Points on Registration, bringing together experts from across the globe to exchange good practices and key insights, which will go towards the development of a 'Registration Toolkit', which will empower countries to:
 
1️⃣ Implement the Registration Convention (1976) or UN General Assembly Resolution 1721 from 1961
2️⃣ Develop their own registries and frameworks at the national level.
3️⃣ Discuss information-sharing and registration of new and novel space activities (3D printing, in-orbit servicing, rovers, cannibalisation of hardware, active debris removal).
 
Director Aarti Holla-Maini, Andrew Peebles, and Scarlet O’Donnell from 🇺🇳 UNOOSA opened the meeting with a strong call for enhanced international expertise to achieve a registration rate of 100% space objects (currently ~88% of all functional space objects - 21,500 - are registered).
 
Keynotes from global experts, including 🇬🇧 Stephen Hill from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, 🇩🇪 Georg Eickmeier from German Aerospace Center (DLR), 🇺🇸 Ryan Guglietta, PhD from the U.S. Department of State, 🇧🇷 Ian Grosner from Brazilian Space Agency (AEB/MCTI), 🇯🇵 Nobuyuki Kikuchi from the Permanent Mission of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan), and 🇬🇧 Ambassador Corinne Kitsell from the UK Mission to the United Nations in Vienna enriched the discussion with national perspectives and policy insights.
 
UNOOSA and #COPUOS2025 are committed to the tangible implementation of space governance. In this regard, we are looking forward to a joint capacity-building workshop with the International Telecommunication Union in June entitled "From an ITU Filing to Registration with UNOOSA – The Life Cycle of a Satellite".
 
A huge thanks to the UK Space Agency for funding phase two of our registration project (which covers the focal point meeting, UNOOSA-ITU workshop, and the toolkit).
