🌍⚖️ Week One Wrap-Up! The 1st week of the Legal Subcommittee #COPUOS2025 just concluded. With record private sector input, the LSC reaffirmed its key role in shaping global space law & policy. Highlights:

1️⃣ Chair Santiago Ripol welcomed 104 Member States, 56 Permanent Observers & 6 new ad-hoc observers: 🇱🇮 🇲🇹 🇺🇬 the League of Arab States, ACES Worldwide & Lunar Policy Platform.

 
2️⃣ #UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini opened the session by emphasizing COPUOS’s leadership in global space governance & the call for bold, dynamic solutions.

 
3️⃣ States addressed legal issues incl. space traffic, debris mitigation, sustainable space resource use, the status of UN space treaties, & the delimitation of outer space.

 
4️⃣ On Monday, UNOOSA hosted "Commercial Perspectives on Space Situational Awareness" with industry leaders from NorthStar Earth & Space, Digantara, Amazon Project Kuiper & Arabsat.

5️⃣ On Tuesday 6 May, the Director moderated "Space traffic: Managing vs Coordinating—what’s the difference & why does it matter?" featuring Rodolphe Muñoz (EC), Amazon Project Kuiper, Arabsat & Viasat.

6️⃣ On Wednesday 7 May, 🇬🇧 UKSA, 🇳🇿, 🇯🇵 & UNOOSA co-hosted "Enabling active debris removal (ADR) and in-orbit servicing missions – perspectives from the UK, New Zealand, and Japan" with Astroscale, D-Orbit & ClearSpace presenting scalable ADR solutions.

7️⃣ Rosanna Hoffmann & Matej Siget presented the Global Space Law Project, with 🇯🇵 Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 🇮🇹 Sapienza Università di Roma, 🇲🇾 Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, & 🇲🇦 RCRS, showcasing efforts to foster robust, investment-friendly legal frameworks.

8️⃣ Key consultations advanced on UNISPACEIV, chaired by 🇲🇦 & 🇮🇹; The Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation (#ATLAC), chaired by Hasan Abbas & Ulpia Elena Botezatu; Space traffic.

9️⃣ Steven Freeland was appointed Chair of the Working Group on Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities, following the passing of Amb. Andrzej Misztal.
