☄️🌍🦖🇺🇳 Is there a chance that we’ll be extinct like the dinosaurs in 2032? Asteroid 2024 YR4 has a 1.5% probability of impacting Earth on 22 December 2032.
 
While current estimates suggest there is a nearly 99% chance that it will safely pass by, this threshold activates global coordination - bringing together UNOOSA, the International Asteroid Warning Network (#IAWN), and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (#SMPAG).
 
🔭 IAWN, led by nasa, is a global network of astronomers and space agencies that detects, tracks, and characterises asteroids. Its work informs decision-making on potential impact risks and mitigation plans.
 
🚀 SMPAG, under europeanspaceagency leadership, unites 19 space agencies & governmental or inter-governmental entities to develop response strategies, including research & development, potential impact mitigation, and deflection missions.
 
🌍 #UNOOSA enables international coordination on #PlanetaryDefence to ensure that all UN Member States receive timely, science-based information.
 
📅 Next Steps: IAWN and SMPAG are meeting this week during the COPUOS Scientific & Technical Subcommittee to advance planetary defence efforts. Future observations through April 2025 will refine impact predictions, as it will be unobservable for 3 years from June.
 
FINALLY, we would like to give a shout out to our very own colleague, Romana Kofler, who works with IAWN and SMPAG. Romana was just awarded the honour of having an asteroid named after her. Asteroid “(22027) Romanakofler = 1999 XS120”, was discovered on 5 December 1999 and is located in the asteroid belt.
