It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Ambassador Andrzej Misztal. As a true multilaterist and distinguished diplomat, Andrzej chaired the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (hashtag#COPUOS) Working Group on the Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities. 

Director Aarti Holla-Maini said: “The space, legal and diplomatic communities have lost a thought-leader. Ambassador Misztal’s leadership of the Working Group on the Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities was pivotal is bridging geopolitical divides, and bringing nations together around developing, for 2027, a common goal of creating a set of initial recommended principles related to the exploration, exploitation, and utilisation of space resources.” 

Steven Freeland, Friend and Vice-Chair of the Space Resources Working Group said: "Andrzej was a visionary, a man of peace and great wisdom and, with the support and guidance of the Member States of COPUOS, we have made very positive strides forward in the work of the Working Group, although there is still much to be done. Working closely with the UNOOSA, we will do all we can to continue that work to its conclusion and ensure that Andrzej's vision and legacy live long."
