2024 was also a year dedicated to #GenderEquality and women and girls in the space sector! And at number 3 of the #UNOOSATop10 campaign, we’re pleased to share: our work in mapping the number (or lack thereof) of women in the space sector; our solution for mainstreaming gender across the space sector; and key takeaways of the annual #Space4Women Expert Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. 

1️⃣ UNOOSA’s landmark #Space4Women study on #GenderEquality in the space sector, funded by KASA: https://lnkd.in/dWngkxW9

👩‍🚀 Presented at IAC2024, it is the largest study of its kind, gathering insights from 53 space agencies and public space organizations globally to assess gender representation and policy in the space sector. Key findings include: 

📊 Women make up 30% of public sector space organizations. 
👩‍💼 Women hold only 19% of board roles and 21% of leadership positions. 
🔬 Women are under-represented in technical, astronaut, and policy roles. 
📚 Over-representation of women in education, outreach, HR, and admin roles. 
🌍 Out of the world regions, African states are closest to gender parity in space. 

2️⃣ The ‘Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit for the Space Sector (see here: https://lnkd.in/ddgW6b4e), funded by Canadian Space Agency, addresses the challenge of gender parity by providing actionable measures under four clusters: 

📊 Committing at all levels to advance gender equality 

👩‍🚀 Creating dedicated programming to empower all women and girls 📈 Measuring and reporting on gender equality outcomes 

3️⃣🌟 Here are some of the takeaways of the #Space4Women Expert Meeting, which was hosted by the Kenyan Space Agency: 

💪🏾Countries came forward to champion the implementation of the Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit over the next year. 

👩🏽Initial consultations took place to elaborate a toolkit to bring STEM education to women and girls in underprivileged areas. 

🌐 Our Space4Women Network, of national and local focal points, expanded and will carry out more regional and national work in the future. 

🏫 Participants called for more funding opportunities for women and girls, including scholarships and mentorship programmes.
