🌏🌊 At Number 6️⃣ of the #UNOOSATop10 highlights of 2024, we’ve got the work of UN-SPIDER to deliver specialised capacity-building on the use of space applications for disasters and emergency response situations.

🇺🇾🇲🇦🇬🇹 We supported Uruguay, Morocco, and Guatemala in 2024 to activate the International Disaster Charter and access data in the aftermath of disasters.

🇹🇴 2024 also saw UNOOSA a partnership between Tonga, UN-SPIDER and CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) to develop a Tonga Preparedness Pilot programme, a crucial initiative that bolsters disaster resilience through satellite-based Earth observation and early warning systems. This project equips local authorities with essential tools for monitoring volcanic activity, cyclones, and rising sea levels, enabling timely and effective responses.

As part of this, we worked with Space Data Inc and Airbus to develop a Digital Twin of Tonga. Digital twin technology is increasingly being used to simulate the effects of sea level rise, providing valuable tools for decision-makers in areas such as urban planning, coastal management, and disaster preparedness.

Did you know that UN-SPIDER offers three types of missions:

1️⃣ Technical Advisory Missions are typically the first mission we do to a country, usually to raise awareness at the government agencies we visit, and as fact-finding for us regarding strengths, weaknesses and needs in government agencies on the use of space technologies. These produce a number of cross-governmental recommendations that States could use to develop National Action Plans. 2025 will see TAMs to the likes of Uzbekistan, Serbia, and Kyrgzystan.

2️⃣ As a follow-up, we would to Institutional Strengthening Missions, where we convene cross-governmental stakeholders or national experts to deliver tailored training courses.

3️⃣ Expert Missions, where experts from one of our 25 Regional Support Offices visit provide national and regional capacity-building opportunities across the Globe.
