Webb peers into the Extreme Outer Galaxy ✨🌌

Prepare to be captivated by @esawebb’s latest voyage to the far reaches of our Milky Way! Webb’s advanced infrared imaging has focused on the galaxy’s outskirts, a star-forming region more than 58 000 light-years away from the Galactic centre, where cosmic fireworks are giving birth to new stars.

Using two of its instruments, Webb has captured stunning detail in the Digel Clouds 1 and 2—molecular clouds teeming with young stars and mysterious jets of material. These clouds offer a glimpse into the early history of our own Milky Way, showing us how stars formed in a time long past.

In one extraordinary image from Cloud 2S, Webb confirmed the presence of a hidden sub-cluster of stars and revealed multiple jets shooting out in all directions! This discovery provides fresh insights into the complex process of star formation, helping scientists piece together the story of our galaxy’s evolution.

But this is just the beginning! The Webb team plans to revisit these star clusters to reveal even more secrets about star masses and environments.

The Universe is full of untold stories, and Webb is helping astronomers unlock a new chapter. Stay tuned for more cosmic discoveries!
