“I have one power. I never give up.” 🦇

This 21 of September is Batman Day and we’re embracing the mysteries of the cosmos, where shadows loom large and persistence leads to discovery.

First, we turn to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, captured by our Rosetta spacecraft. While this comet is often compared to a duck, in this close-up view, it takes on a bat-like form with twin peaks resembling ears. Just as Batman never gives up, Rosetta’s mission followed this comet tirelessly, from afar to within 20 metres, revealing its captivating shape.

Next, @hubbleesa reveals the Serpens Nebula, where a shadow play worthy of Gotham’s protector unfolds. A star’s protoplanetary disc casts a massive shadow, spanning 200 times the diameter of our Solar System, earning it the nickname “Bat Shadow.” Could this be the Bat-Signal in the stars?

As we honour the Caped Crusader, let’s marvel at these natural phenomena that remind us how the mysteries of space often mirror the legends and symbols we hold dear on Earth.
