What's an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device (AAC)? 🤔 These tools can be a communication lifeline for someone with speech or language impairments. This #NationalSpeechLanguageHearingMonth, our amazing Speech Language Pathologists are sharing some insights about the impact of this life-changing technology!

"AAC is so important for giving a voice to all of our patients who aren’t able to communicate effectively using verbal speech. AAC systems provide our patients with opportunities to communicate about their wants/needs, interests, and engage in meaningful social interactions. We work with our patients to find the best way for them to access a personal AAC system, whether that’s through direct touch, eye gaze, and/or switches. It’s so rewarding to work with patients and their families in finding the right AAC system to enable our patients to express themselves and have their voices be heard!"
-Becca Carden, SLP

"AAC is a tool I use in my speech and language therapy sessions to support patients with a variety of communication challenges. AAC is important to help children decrease frustration, express themselves, communicate their wants and needs, and interact with peers. Customizing a child’s AAC device is one my favorite parts of therapy by programming their preferred TV shows, songs, family members pictures, etc. to make their device more personalized. The first time a child uses AAC to communicate with their parents is such a magical experience and I am lucky to experience these moments every day!”
-Caroline Mondell, SLP

"Children with complex bodies that prevent them from sufficiently using their voice, still have the DESIRE and RIGHT to communication. AAC opens doors to deeper connections and understanding when the individual, family, therapists, and support persons work collaboratively to find a path for communication that is individualized for each person based on their strengths and presumed competence."
-Katie Shepard, SLP
